CHICAGO - JP Morgan Chase Bank donated 2.3 million dollars to fund security cameras for Chicago Public Schools to curb the city's youth violence.
Mayor Daley, Police Superintendent Jody Weis, and Chicago Public School officials accepted the gift at Walter Dyett High School in Washington Park today.
With the generous donation the city will install another 90 surveillance cameras near 40 public high schools, Mayor Richard Daley announced today.
That's on top of the 70 high schools that already have exterior cameras monitoring them, Chicago Public Schools CEO Ron Huberman said. Once the work is done, more than 70 percent of the 154 public high schools will have the cameras.
The cameras will be hooked into the city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications, as part of Daley's plan to use technology to increase camera surveillance throughout Chicago.
Mayor Daley says the cameras will help both the schools and the surrounding area.
