Derrion Albert was 16-years-old, when he was beaten to death in front of the Agape Community Center in Roseland, while other teens laughed and video taped it! Derrion was murdered on September 25, 2009. I've read several versions of what happened that day. Some say Derrion was beaten for refusing to join a gang. Other websites are reporting that Derrion was killed because he was in a rival gang. Who knows? Who cares? The point is… he is dead, and his family is left torn apart.

This this is sad. What gets me the most is in the video where the first words the girls says is zoom in. I mean come on how is someone first thought to be oh lets record this kid getting the shit kicked out of him oh and zoom in for a better shot. But hey lets not try and call to get help at all and just continue to film this because it will help. To the person who said that "All blacks are savages!" you just sicken me. Desen your right white people used to be the worst but as the 21st century rolls around blacks are cleary more violent. A black male 20-24 has a 1 in 3 chance of being killed by another black male. Whites of the same age have a 1 in 153 chance of being killed by another white male. What you see in that video isnt a bunch of regular black kids. They were "niggers". Ok, I am disgusted by any and all child violence. I am white. I am 40 and I am a woman. When I heard this story today, my first thought was: "Where the hell is Obama first, then Oprah (who airs a daily show from Chicago), then Bill Cosby, Rev. Jackson, Al Sharpton??? Where is the Black leadership in this country and why aren't they actively involved in trying to end the violence?" The news reports of 35 deaths in this school district last year. WHY?? And the boy beaten on the bus in Illinois for just wanting to sit down - the kids that laugh? It is obvious we are in a crisis and battle for the welfare of our kids - black, white, poor, gang members, it matters not! Kids should not be dying on the streets, while people that can make a difference just stand by and allow it to continue! I am so angry at so many people for this. What is the state of Illios doing to quell gang violence? This should be a top priority.

That's very sad and disturbing. I know when I was around that boys age I was out getting into fights and involving myself in things that could've harmed people. As I look back now I'm glad that I never had a situation end as his did. I'm a 20 year old working young woman, still in my same neighborhood but carrying a different state of mind.
It hurts me now when I watch the news in my city (Buffalo, NY) and see that teens are slaying each other. There's a war in my town now between a group of adults and 15-20 year olds. The kids are acting as though they have nothing to live for when they are so young (as I'm 20 years old and value every minute I have). They just don't see the bigger picture.
While I don't blame powers of authority in Chicago I can say it's appearant they need to step up based on the statistics of that neighborhood. There is no way to fully wipe out crime. Especially in poverty stricken neighborhoods, whether black, white, latino, asian....whatever. When people don't grow up seeing a light at the end of the tunnel they seem to not care as much. It's up to the people with the positive light whether young or old to step in and make a difference.
There's enough peole who care, but not enough who make an effort. It's wonderful that people feel so strongly about the issue but it isn't okay to feel that way and not step up. In other words, don't talk about it, be about it. And people will blame music, the media, whatever...at the end of the day that is a apart of the outside world, we need to be more concerned with our communities and instill proper beliefs and morals in our youth so that we can prevent the majority of these situations. Because as I said, while very unfortunate, there is no way to totally get rid of this kind of ignorance. But if we work in the masses, we relinquish some of the more obnoxious acts like this one.

I am a mother, I saw this on the news today then had to find a place where I could vent and say I am sorry to this young mans family. No child should have to live like this! I wish I could do something for these children. How sad that a young man was killed outside a youth center with the name Agape, meaning love. Are there no adults in that area? I agree so much with what you said sir on You Tube about the 3 influential persons Obama, Oprah and the mayor. It makes me sick that politicians do nothing to help the kids!! They are so worried about bringing in money or healthcare well guess what? this young man does not need healthcare now! These kids need love they need adults to be adults and do whatever it takes to keep them safe!!! If you ask me this is more a tragedy than what happeded in New Orleans with Katrina, that was brought on by natural disaster. These kids need help!! I will be praying that something will be done. So I guess my question would be what can Daley, Oprah and Obama do. It starts with parenting, I have seen many programs started and ended cause kids dont show and parents dont make them. I just had this talk with a few co workers and I just want to get a clear answer as to what you would suggest be done. I will be waiting for an answer. I know people who get involved, but it is up to the kids to say enough is enough, they video tape and laugh instead of calling the cops, or telling who on who the persons involved were. please if u can share a solution to the problem let me know. To The person that responded from Watts, while you made some good points, you also said somethings that distrubed me. You continuously refer to the issue stemming from white people wanting us to do this to each other. That's as close-minded, to me, as the person saying all blacks are savages. My mother is not a savage, nor my father, brother, or sister, or anyone in my family that comes to mind. All of us are black. The issue at hand was of savage characterisitics and there is nothing okay about what happened in that video, but it's because of lack of knowledge and foresight.
Obivously these kids are misguided. While you say the media played an effect on this situation, I don't doubt that some parents do allow TV to raise them, and that needs to be addressed in our communities as well, but bad parenting doesn't start with the media. I cant stress enough the community needs to look out for one another and raise the children....it takes more than just the parents because they're not the only ones that are going to interact with these children on a day to day basis.
Like you, I was in the streets as well. It wasn't even because of how my parents raised me though. It was more of my choice to go astray. Not because of the media, "the white man" or anything like that. I just chose too surround myself with certain people and we chose to do stupid things without thinking. We all had something to prove to each other. I hid things from my mother because I knew she would never approve of any of the things I was doing. I can't say it was to the point I'm in drive-bys and killing people. But I was going around fighting, and as I said before, I'm lucky nothing ever happened to this extent. To this day I still have the same friends, and like I also said before, I live in the very same neighborhood, but I carry a new state of mind where I don't fight for my respect, I work for it. Much the same for my friends. While none of us are perfect or can be and still may include ourselves in some not so good circumstances, we have grown out of this reckless mind state.
And if you want to blame the media, while Tupac was a very intellectualy stimulating artisit, he himself also said a lot of violent things. Is he to blame as well, or do you just want to look at what he said that was helpful? Like I said, people will try and first blame the media, then the parents....I blame no one, but can offer the only solution I see that makes sense. I took a class called Crime and Society and I always advocated individual choice against enviromental influences, media outlets and other circumstances, but then came to realize it all plays apart. The media just, to me, doesn't play that big of a role. If in our communities we strived for more and did more, our children would look to us as role models. They wouldn't need the TV. So let's look at where these issues are stemming from and place blame on our own backs. Stop accusing "the white man" who is no better or less than ourselves for causing and wanting us to destroy each other. You speak almost as if this child was white this video would not disturb you as much, or for that matter if they were all white you'd rather that so you can say "see white people do it too." While it's the truth amongst youths all over America in every race that fights happen and people die, those cases are all sad as well.
I just isn't about doing it to your "own kind". It's about the issues that allow you to degrade yourself so much to something like this in the first place. I cant stress enough that white people did not cause this. How can we have come so far in life to still be blaming a race for our issues. There are racist of every color and creed, blacks, whites, asians, latinos, whoever. That can't be the line we use everytime something happens...."This is what the white man wants." No this is what these children wanted to do whether or not they knew the end result exactly. I see one white person in this video and she opened the doors to allow the boys friends in. I didn't see her cheering them on, I seen no white person out there dictating that childs murder. It's time to stop pointing the finger as though they hold us back. That excuse is holding us back. You fight for respect from all races with credentials. There are black people who look down their nose to other black people, and some even live in the same areas while doing it.
All in all, walking around with an angry heart is killing our community. Be angry enough to step up and open centers for youths that teach them the right way to go and move forward. You refer to the Lord a lot in your response, walk with him, because never once have I heard in my church that God made any one race superior to another, never once was I taught that at all. I did learn however that without a faith to ground you, no matter what that faith may be, you have nothing. They have to know their value and self worth, they need to know what they are capable of doing if they put the time and effort into being somebody.
And to the person responding what can Obama and Oprah and Daley do...I don't think them being there at that moment would have stopped this, I do feel as though there presence and effort as the elite coming from Chicago, including themselves in the effort to teach these communities would have an effect on them. I seen so many people, young people, become interested and truely interested in politics on the strength of Obama that that alone shows me he can influenece change. Now regardless of the politics, he is just an example that color doesn't hold you back. He and his wife were both succesful prior the election. I just feel that if they stepped up and started being active, where the Mayor needs to be point blank period (it's huis job), then people would get involved. TO MACY FROM TEXAS...i feel what u saying, but we need the people n the communities where this violence is happening to stop it n stop relying on oprah to do something. not to be funny buts all she's going to is sit on her couch and talk about this. then she may go to 1 neighborhood n do a short interview with a couple of kids. the community really need to start forming groups to stop this mess.

i hope they find every last kid who touch that boy and give them the death penalty. i find no point in keeping a fucking murderer in jail living for years when this kid died. they need to be died too. (also the police need to do better jobs at finding murderers period cuz some ppl are innocent like that blk man who spent years in prison supposedly b/c the real murderer made some deal that he didnt want to be reveal as the murderer or something like that.) violence like this and others make me want to take shit into my own hands
African Americans need to now that in this day in time fighting eachother and killing eachother is what the police (african american as well as white) what for this community. Hopefully, you young individuals who call yourselves gang members will realize that life is to short just make money and stop killing one another. I send my condolences to the parents and family!!!!
It was tough to watch someone die but the black community really needs light to shine on them. You would think that after everthing their ancestors have endured they would better themselves. It is sad that they diminish what it means to be an American. Simply PATHETIC!
